Can you order a specialized license plate and keep the original license plate in NC?

I recently received a specialized license plate as a gift but I already have a license plate currently on my vehicle. Do I have to return my original license plate to the DMV in NC or am I able to keep both license plates and use just one at my discretion?|||No,no,no. I also am recommending that all drivers please use turn signals for all lane changes, turns, entry/exits to Interstates, etc. The usual distance required by law is 100 ft prior to the turns.
